Around a year since the last post about the '54 Chevy truck. not much has altered in terms of it becoming roadworthy, but we did get a large heavy duty chassis jig made to mount the chassis on so that the basics can start to be mocked up. Next stage will be to make custom mounts to allow the jag front clip to sit correctly and securely on the chassis. 5 link rear end with a 8.8 Ford locker diff will take care of the business end. It's been a while since we did anything on this BMW Z3M, but often there's no huge rush on jobs, and the research into how to best go about the work and then cost the work takes time and discussions. On this project the car had developed a 'knock' prior to being laid up. So due to the rarity of these cars the decision was made to investigate the engine first and foremost. Worst fears realised the knock as indeed the big end devouring the crank on No.2!! 😭. After much toing and froing and more research into the cost the decision was made to ship the engine to a specialist for proper evaluation. That way we can see if any other damage had been done so a full estimate could be completed. This wasn't something we could do in house due to the specialist tools needed to even dismantle the engine without damage. So until this is resolved the project is again 'shelved' until we can move forwards. Next step on the GMC list was to make the gear selector more user friendly. As you can see the old set up was a bit......hmmmm 🤔. So something that would be more practical as well as in keeping with the truck was requested. The original Mercedes gear selector was sourced and a bespoke housing made to fit to the set itself so that when the seat was moved the selector housing moved with it. This meant full cable operation and since the old box was push rod the selector movement had to be reversed. So a bespoke reversal unit was fabricated, tested & bolted to the gearbox. Continuation of work on Carl's Firenza. Basically remove as much rot as possible and still try and keep to budget so he can have the car for the summer months. As always with old cars, the more you poke the more you find. We can rebuild as much as we can in house, but thankfully some VVOC club member Mike Edwards has been making bespoke hand made floorpans for these old cars for a few years and the fit is perfect so it was a no brainer to use these on this restoration.
